APS Superintendent Meria Carstarphen Speaks to the Atlanta Press Club

What

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Meria J. Carstarphen, Ed.D., will address the Atlanta Press Club at a Newsmaker Luncheon on Thursday, October 17.

Dr. Carstarphen has been in her role as APS Superintendent since 2014. APS recently announced that it will not renew her contract past June 30, 2020.

Since 2014, Dr. Carstarphen has increased graduation rates to an all-time high of 79.9 percent and reduced dropout rates to 5.6 percent. She leads the district’s 52,000 students, 6,000 employees and 87 schools and oversees the system’s $1 billion annual budget.

Dr. Carstarphen has nearly 20 years of education and experience in diverse, major metropolitan public school districts, including Austin, Texas; Saint Paul, Minn.; and the District of Columbia. A public school graduate, Dr. Carstarphen is from Selma, Alabama, where she began her teaching career.

The ticket price does not include parking. Parking is available in the 191 Building parking deck with entrances on Ellis Street and Peachtree Center Avenue. Discounted parking vouchers for this deck will be available for $10 at the event. Guests must bring the ticket they receive upon entering the deck to receive the discount. The Peachtree Center MARTA station is also conveniently located nearby.
